The Tirrenia di Navigazione fleet has conspicuously evolved over the past two years: the traditional ferries have been replaced with vessels that have been fitted out as cruise liners rather than ferries. |
 |
Between 1999 and 2001 two new twin ferries entered service: the Vincenzo Florio and the Raffaele Rubattino. These ships can carry in the greatest comfort 1,378 passengers and 700 cars between Naples and Palermo. |

Between Summer 2001 and Spring 2002 the new fast ferries Bithia and Janas entered service. These, too, are twin ships and can carry in the utmost comfort as many as 2,700 passengers and 900 cars. |

Early 2003 saw the ship Aurelia back in service, her interior radically refitted and brought up to the level of the other newer ships.
By June the Aurelia's sister ship, the Clodia, also completely refitted, was back in service.
In June 2004 the Nomentana came back into service, after being refitted like her sister ships Aurelia and Clodia. |

In 2003 the brand new Athara, in the same class as the Bithia and the Janas, came into service. |
 |
In July 2004 and March 2005, respectively, the Nuraghes and the Sharden entered the service. They are based on the Bithia, Janas and Athara, but have more garage space and they can transport 3,000 passengers and 1,085 cars. All these ships are used on the connections to and from Sardinia. |

The two vessels Domiziana and Flaminia of the Adriatica Division of Tirrenia di Navigazione have also been modernised to raise their standard to the level of the other Tirrenia ships. Today these ships each offer a capacity of 2,000 passengers and 610 cars on the international connection with Albania. |
