In 1966 some of the units operating on the routes to Sardinia were replaced with ships built to a new architectural standard: the ferries. The easy and fast handling of vehicles were of advantage both to cars and to freight, which could now avoid the loading, stowing and unloading with the old styled cranes. |

In 1969, passengers were over two millions, accompanying cars attained the level of 200,000 and the carried freight reached half a million tons. The correspondence of the ferries to the market demand was such that six new units of such type were introduced in the fleet in '70-'71. |

In the early '70s, Tirrenia commissioned all cargo units, apt to loading and unloading of trailers and containers, whose use was spreading out. |

Also during the '80s new units progressively took the place of older ships, but it is mostly during the last decade that the Company fleet has been radically renovated and rationalised, in close adherence to the changing market demand with an increase of the transport capacity of each unit. |
