Since 1999 the traditional ferries have been replaced with new vessels that have the typical fittings of cruise liners.

With over one new ship per year being launched and added to the fleet, new and ultramodern vessels are sailing out of the shipyards to join the Sardinia and Sicily lines.

During the same period the ferries of the Transformed Strade Romane series were refurbished and brought up to the exacting standards of the new ships.

Between 1999 and 2001 the twin ferries Vincenzo Florio and
Raffaele Rubattino entered service on the Naples-Palermo route.

Between 2001 and 2002 the new fast ferries Bithia and Janas entered service between Sardinia and Genoa.
These, too, are twin ships and can travel at 30 knots.

In 2003 the refitted Aurelia was back, as was her twin the Clodia, which had also been refitted.
In 2003 the ship Athara, in the same class as the Bithia and the Janas, also came into service.

During 2004 the Nomentana also took up service again, having been refitted like the twin ships Aurelia and Clodia; the new ferry Nuraghes, based on the Bithia, Janas and Athara, but with a larger garage space, was added to the line.
Finally, in 2005 the Sharden, twin of the Nuraghes, joined the fleet.

In the meantime, Adriatica di Navigazione became a Division of Tirrenia di Navigazione; the ships in service on the international stretch with Albania were also modernised to raise their standard to the level of the other Tirrenia ships.
